Ausangate, Rainbow Mountain & Machu Picchu – 4 Days / 3 Nights
Embark on an unforgettable adventure that combines three of Peru's most spectacular destinations into one incredible journey. This 4-day tour brings together the majestic Ausangate Mountain, the vibrant colors of Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain), and the once-in-a-lifetime experience of visiting Machu Picchu. It is the perfect itinerary for travelers who want to combine high-altitude trekking with one of the world's most iconic archaeological sites.
During the first two days, you'll hike through some of the most remote landscapes of the Vilcanota Mountain Range. Trek past glaciers, turquoise lakes, vast wetlands, and open valleys where alpacas and llamas graze freely beneath the towering presence of Apu Ausangate, the sacred mountain of Cusco.
On the third day, you'll reach the world-famous Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca), renowned for its extraordinary mineral-colored slopes. Weather and trail conditions permitting, you'll also visit the breathtaking Red Valley, an off-the-beaten-path destination offering spectacular panoramic views with far fewer visitors. That afternoon, you'll travel to Ollantaytambo to board the train to Aguas Calientes, preparing for your visit to Machu Picchu the following day.
On the final day, you'll explore Machu Picchu with an expert guide. Combining high-altitude trekking with one of the world's greatest archaeological wonders makes this itinerary one of the most complete adventures available in Peru.

Why Travelers Enjoy This Tour
This itinerary combines some of Peru's most breathtaking landscapes into one unforgettable adventure. Unlike programs that only visit Rainbow Mountain or Machu Picchu, this experience allows you to first discover the peaceful beauty of Ausangate, one of South America's most spectacular mountain ranges.
One of the greatest highlights of this journey is the perfect balance between adventure and comfort. After two incredible days of trekking through remote Andean landscapes and camping beneath star-filled skies, you'll relax in a comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes before exploring one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Throughout the expedition, you'll witness an extraordinary variety of scenery, from glaciers and alpine lakes to colorful mountains, traditional villages, cloud forests, and the majestic ruins of Machu Picchu. Few tours in Peru offer such a diverse and rewarding experience in just four days.
What Makes This Experience Special
What truly sets this tour apart is its unique combination of three extraordinary experiences that are usually offered separately. In just four days, you'll trek alongside the sacred Ausangate Mountain, visit Rainbow Mountain and the stunning Red Valley, and finish your adventure exploring Machu Picchu—all without returning to Cusco between destinations, allowing you to make the most of your time in Peru.
The route showcases some of the most spectacular scenery in the Vilcanota Mountain Range, including glaciers, turquoise alpine lakes, mountain passes above 4,900 meters (16,000 feet), colorful valleys, high-altitude wetlands, and traditional communities that have preserved their Andean way of life for centuries.
The journey concludes with a professionally guided tour of Machu Picchu, where you'll discover the remarkable history, architecture, and engineering of the Inca civilization while exploring one of the world's most extraordinary archaeological sites.
Best Time to Travel
The best time to experience the Ausangate, Rainbow Mountain & Machu Picchu 4-Day Tour is from April through October, during the dry season in the Peruvian Andes. During these months, you're more likely to enjoy clear skies, spectacular views of Ausangate, Rainbow Mountain, and Machu Picchu, as well as the best hiking conditions.
From November through March, rainfall becomes more frequent, and some trails may be muddy, snowy, or slippery, especially at higher elevations. However, the mountains become greener and the landscapes even more vibrant. If traveling during the rainy season, we highly recommend bringing waterproof hiking boots, a rain jacket or poncho, and warm layered clothing.
Weather conditions around Ausangate can change rapidly. Even during the dry season, expect bright sunshine during the day, strong winds at high mountain passes, and below-freezing temperatures at night. Dressing in layers is the best way to stay comfortable throughout the trek.
Who This Tour Is For
This itinerary is designed for travelers who want to combine an authentic high-altitude trekking adventure with a visit to one of the world's most extraordinary archaeological sites. It is perfect for those looking for much more than a traditional Machu Picchu tour while exploring some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the Peruvian Andes.
It is also an excellent choice for active travelers who enjoy hiking through remote landscapes, photographing snow-capped peaks, glacial lakes, and Andean wildlife, and discovering places few visitors ever experience before arriving at Machu Picchu.
Although the trek does not require technical climbing skills, it does demand good physical fitness due to the altitude and consecutive hiking days. We recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before the tour to properly acclimatize.

Your adventure begins early with pickup from your hotel in Cusco at approximately 4:30 a.m. We'll travel southeast through traditional Andean villages, fertile farmlands, and breathtaking mountain scenery until we reach Tinki, the gateway to the Ausangate Mountain Range. After approximately three hours on the road, we'll enjoy a freshly prepared breakfast cooked by our trekking chef before organizing our duffel bags and meeting the horsemen and support crew who will accompany us throughout the expedition.
We'll begin hiking through wide-open valleys where llamas and alpacas graze freely beneath the towering presence of Apu Ausangate, the highest and most sacred mountain in the Cusco region. The trail gradually ascends through high-altitude wetlands, crystal-clear streams, and expansive alpine landscapes, offering spectacular panoramic views of the Vilcanota Mountain Range.
Around midday, our trekking chef will prepare a delicious hot lunch surrounded by glaciers and towering peaks. This is your first opportunity to truly appreciate the untouched beauty of Ausangate, far from the crowds and immersed in one of Peru's most pristine mountain environments.
During the afternoon, we'll continue hiking to our campsite located beside the famous Upis Hot Springs. Before dinner, you'll have time to soak in the natural thermal pools while enjoying spectacular views of Ausangate glowing beneath the afternoon sunlight—one of the most relaxing moments of the entire trek.

Wake up to a hot cup of coca tea or freshly brewed coffee delivered directly to your tent while watching the first rays of sunlight illuminate the snow-covered slopes of Ausangate. After a hearty breakfast, we'll begin the longest and most demanding hiking day of the expedition—also one of the most rewarding in terms of scenery.
Our trail winds through the vast Andean puna, surrounded by golden grasslands, glaciers, pristine alpine lakes, and dramatic mountain landscapes. As we steadily gain elevation, the scenery becomes increasingly spectacular, revealing snow-capped peaks, rocky ridges, colorful valleys, and wide-open plains where alpacas, llamas, vicuñas, and occasionally viscachas can be seen in their natural habitat.
After several hours of hiking, we'll arrive at the stunning Pucacocha Lake, one of the most photogenic glacial lakes in the entire Vilcanota Mountain Range. Here, our chef will prepare a freshly cooked lunch while you relax and admire the brilliant turquoise waters reflecting the surrounding glaciers.
In the afternoon, we'll continue ascending toward Alpaca Pass, located at approximately 4,989 m / 16,368 ft. From the summit, you'll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Ausangate, its glaciers, colorful mountain slopes, and remote Andean valleys stretching across the horizon. After taking time to rest and capture unforgettable photographs, we'll begin our gradual descent toward our campsite in Ananta.
Upon arrival, our support team will welcome you with hot drinks and afternoon snacks before serving another freshly prepared dinner. If the skies are clear, you'll have the opportunity to experience one of the most spectacular star-filled nights in the Peruvian Andes, far away from any artificial light.

Day 3: Ananta – Rainbow Mountain – Red Valley – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes
After an early breakfast, we'll begin the final day of trekking toward one of Peru's most iconic natural attractions: Rainbow Mountain, also known as Vinicunca or Winikunka. We'll hike through spectacular high-altitude landscapes as the morning sun gradually illuminates the vibrant mineral-colored slopes that have made this mountain famous around the world.
The trail climbs steadily through small Andean valleys where local shepherds still tend their alpacas, and traditional stone houses blend naturally into the rugged mountain scenery. As we approach the viewpoint, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, with the snow-capped peaks of the Vilcanota Mountain Range and the majestic Ausangate Glacier dominating the horizon.
After approximately three hours of hiking, we'll arrive at the main viewpoint of Rainbow Mountain, located at approximately 5,036 m / 16,522 ft above sea level. You'll have plenty of time to explore the area, take photographs, and admire the incredible natural mineral formations that have made Vinicunca one of South America's most photographed destinations.
If weather conditions, trail access, and local regulations permit, we'll continue to the spectacular Red Valley. This hidden gem features striking crimson-colored hills that create a completely different landscape from Rainbow Mountain and usually offers a much quieter experience away from the crowds. It is considered one of the most impressive viewpoints in the entire region.
After enjoying Red Valley, we'll descend to meet our trekking crew, who will be waiting with a freshly prepared lunch. Following lunch, we'll say goodbye to our chef, horsemen, and support staff before boarding our private transportation to Ollantaytambo, traveling through the breathtaking Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Once inside the Historic Sanctuary, your professional guide will lead a 2 to 3-hour guided tour through the most important sectors permitted on your assigned circuit. You'll learn about the remarkable engineering, architecture, religious significance, and history of the Inca Empire while exploring its temples, agricultural terraces, ceremonial plazas, sacred fountains, and residential areas.
Whenever possible, we prioritize Circuit 2, as it offers the most complete visit to Machu Picchu. If Circuit 2 is unavailable, we'll secure the best official alternative based on current availability issued by Peru's Ministry of Culture.
