Why Travelers Love This Tour
This journey stands out because it combines two of Peru’s most remarkable trekking experiences into a single adventure. You will first explore the remote Lares Valley, where spectacular mountain scenery, traditional villages, and authentic Andean culture create a unique connection with the local way of life. The second part of the trek follows the legendary Short Inca Trail, allowing you to walk on original Inca pathways that have connected the Andes for centuries.
Along the Lares route, you will visit communities where Quechua traditions are still part of everyday life. Meet local families, admire colorful handmade textiles, observe alpacas and llamas grazing across the mountains, and experience a side of Peru that few travelers have the opportunity to see.
Once you join the Short Inca Trail, the scenery changes dramatically as the path enters the cloud forest. Ancient stone trails, lush vegetation, waterfalls, and remarkable archaeological sites such as Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna reveal the incredible engineering and history of the Inca civilization.
The grand finale is unforgettable. After hiking through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), you will enjoy your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu from the same entrance used by Inca pilgrims centuries ago. Arriving at the Lost City on foot is a truly rewarding experience that combines adventure, history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes into one unforgettable journey.
What Makes This Experience Special
What makes this adventure truly unique is the opportunity to experience three very different sides of the Peruvian Andes in a single journey. The route combines the authentic culture of the Lares Valley, the historic pathways of the Short Inca Trail, and the unforgettable arrival at Machu Picchu, creating an experience that blends nature, history, and local traditions.
As you hike through the Lares Valley, you'll visit remote Andean communities where ancient customs are still part of everyday life. Meet local families, admire their colorful textiles, watch alpacas and llamas grazing across the mountains, and experience a slower, more authentic side of Peru that few travelers have the chance to discover.
The adventure continues on the legendary Short Inca Trail, where centuries-old stone paths lead through lush cloud forests and remarkable archaeological sites such as Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna. Every step follows the footsteps of the ancient Incas, making the journey itself as rewarding as the destination.
The experience reaches its unforgettable finale when you arrive at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) and witness your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu. After days of hiking through mountains, valleys, and ancient trails, entering the Lost City of the Incas on foot is a truly emotional moment that few travelers ever forget.
Best Time to Travel
The ideal time to hike the Lares Trek and Short Inca Trail is during the dry season, from April through October. These months typically offer sunny days, clear mountain views, and the best trail conditions, making the trek more enjoyable and rewarding.
From November to March, the Andes experience the rainy season. While the mountains become greener and the landscapes more vibrant, trails can be muddy and slippery, and weather conditions are less predictable. Occasional rain showers are common, especially in the afternoons.
Regardless of the season, temperatures vary considerably throughout the day. Mornings and evenings at higher elevations can be quite cold, while midday often brings strong sunshine. Dressing in layers and carrying waterproof gear is the best way to stay comfortable during the trek.
Because permits for the Short Inca Trail are limited and often sell out months in advance, we recommend booking your trip as early as possible, especially if you plan to travel during the peak season between May and September.
Who This Tour Is For
This adventure is designed for travelers who want more than simply visiting Machu Picchu. It is the perfect choice for those looking to combine breathtaking mountain scenery, authentic cultural encounters, and one of the world's most iconic hiking routes in a single journey.
The Lares Trek is ideal for nature lovers, hikers, photographers, and anyone interested in experiencing traditional Andean communities before continuing along the legendary Short Inca Trail. Along the way, you'll discover remote villages, meet local families, and enjoy spectacular landscapes before reaching the Lost City of the Incas.
This tour is best suited for active travelers with a good level of fitness. Daily hikes take place at high altitude and include mountain passes, uneven trails, and several hours of walking. Although previous trekking experience is helpful, it is not required for travelers who are physically prepared and properly acclimatized.
We recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before the trek to adapt to the altitude. This will help you enjoy the experience more comfortably while reducing the chances of altitude sickness during your journey through the Andes.
