Why You’ll Love This Experience
Palcoyo is one of those experiences that surprises you from the very beginning of the journey. You do not need a long hike to feel surrounded by the vastness of the Andes. As you move along the route, the landscape begins to change: wide valleys, gentle mountains, Andean animals, and natural colors that slowly appear along the slopes.
Unlike other more crowded routes, Palcoyo can be enjoyed at a calmer pace. You will have time to walk slowly, breathe, take photos, and connect with the landscape without feeling rushed. The hike is shorter and gradual, allowing you to enjoy each viewpoint more comfortably.
One of the most beautiful things about this route is that you will not see just one colorful mountain. In Palcoyo, you will find several colorful slopes, open views, and, if the weather is favorable, the famous Stone Forest, a place that feels almost otherworldly.
It is an ideal tour if you are looking for a beautiful, photogenic, and more accessible Andean experience, while still enjoying the magic of a colorful mountain in Cusco.
What Makes This Tour Special
What makes Palcoyo special is its peaceful atmosphere. It is a perfect alternative for those who want to see landscapes similar to Rainbow Mountain, but with less physical effort and a more relaxed setting.
Here, the hike does not feel like a race to reach a single viewpoint. The route allows you to enjoy several colorful mountains, take breaks, capture photos, and move at a comfortable pace. The landscape is also very open, so you will have wide views of the Andes throughout much of the experience.
Another special highlight is the Stone Forest, an area of natural rock formations that complements the visit beautifully. If the group feels well and the weather allows, this additional hike can become one of the most memorable moments of the day.
Although Palcoyo is gentler than Vinicunca, it is still a high-altitude experience. For that reason, we travel calmly, with a professional guide, assistance during the route, a first-aid kit, and emergency oxygen.
Best Season to Visit
The Palcoyo tour can be done year-round. The best season is usually from April to October, during the dry season, when there is a better chance of clear skies and better conditions to enjoy the viewpoints.
From November to March, rainfall is more frequent, but the landscapes can look greener and more dramatic. During this season, we recommend bringing a rain poncho or waterproof jacket, as the weather in the mountains can change quickly.
Who This Tour Is Ideal For
This tour is ideal for travelers who want to visit a colorful mountain but prefer a shorter and less demanding hike than Vinicunca. It is an excellent option for people who enjoy nature, photography, and high-altitude landscapes, but do not want to take on a route that is too steep.
It is also recommended for active families, couples, groups of friends, and travelers who have already spent one or two days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley to acclimatize better.
Although the hike is short, the altitude is still high. For this reason, we recommend walking slowly, staying well hydrated, and always following your guide’s instructions.
